Today I’m going to be reviewing the Olloclip Telephoto+Circular Polarizing Lens. It been reviewed by countless bloggers but I’m going to go into it more details than most reviewers and video bloggers. You’ve just watched an into on how the lenses work in a fun way.
This is my Olloclip Telephoto+CPL, all it’s in it’s nice package.
These are all the items you get in the package. You get a lot of stuff. It comes with the telephoto 2x, circular polarizer filter, iPod Touch clip, 2 micro fiber bags, lens cap, filter case and 2 protective o-rings.
Now I’m going to be honest, when I saw those 2 o-rings. I had to wonder what they were for and then while I was shooting I figured it out. So the top two photos are a demo of what you do with the o-ring. You get an extra ring with the package. There was another thing some people complained there was no cap for the circular polarizer filter. I can see why it came with a case and not a cap. If you were to have a cap on the polarizer and pulled it off, the polarizer would get stuck in the cap because you pull the polarizer off the clip to place it the telephoto lens.
This is what the telephoto+CPL will look like on your iPhone.
Here are three shots I took with ProCamera 7 and telephoto+CPL. The first photo is just a normal shot. The second is with the circular polarizer. The third shot is taken with the telephoto. They came out really nice when you take square photos.
It’s great taken portraits, so you don’t get weird facial angles. Again it’s great taking square portraits with this lens.
However when you take 4:3 or 2:3 format photo you will see the blurred edges and some chromatic aberration in the corners of the photos.
Here’s a close up so you see for yourself. Depending on the photos you take the chromatic aberrations will intensify and stand out. It might not be so bad taking street photos or urban photo with muted colours or black and whites. I would stick with taking square (1:1) photos with the telephoto lens. In comparison to other 2x telephoto mobile lenses I’ve used, I would consider the lens quality a slight step up to prosumer and not pro quality. The reason is. The telephoto is made of real glass and not plastic. The polarizer is great on any format photo.
Now we move onto the app and the recent update. The biggest update with app was with new iPad support for iPad Olloclip 4-in-1 lens system.
Now this is the camera taking part of the app. It has changed a little bit but not a whole lot.
You still have the crop factor on the top header of the app. It helps taking the those pesky lens corners and cut out the blurred edges from the fisheye and wide angle lenses.
Ok, this was the most import part of the app, the defish and take out the distortion in your photo. I played with it on my iPhone 4S and my iPad 4. It still crashes with my iPhone 4S when you save your photo in the lens correction part of the app. However on my iPad 4, it’s stable and works really well. So for the people with iPhones 5/5S/5C this will work on your iPhones 4S, you can forget when use this section of the app. I tried doing everything from turning off the apps in the background to uninstall/reinstall to hard reset. The app crashes on this part. Another is you can only use JPEG photos, this app doesn’t support other file formats. The camera part of the app works really well and it’s stable for the iPhone 4S.
