Today I’m going to talk about the xShot iPhone 4/4s case with mini tripod. This is some really nice iPhone photo gear if you’re starting out with mobile photography or in the intermediate level.
These are all the pieces you get when open up the xShot box. You get a rubberized iPhone case, 2 tripod mounts and tripod legs. Now what impressed me was the tripod legs, I thought they were plastic but the legs are metal and little heavy. Which is great because I know my iPhone will stand in place and not too worried about it tipping over. The tripod mounts are really made nicely with a clip to lock in place and slide on and off easily. They also have metal brass threads inside so you don’t have to worry about the threads getting stripped out over time. There is a tiny problem I do have when you slip the case of the iPhone. *WARNING* If you have a screen protector all the way to the edge of the iPhone, the case will bubble and peel long the edges of the iPhone.
As you can see the iPhone 4S is in landscape (horizontal) and the tripod legs on the xShot are really sturdy and stable. I’m actually impressed with this tiny tripod with it’s metal legs.
Now here we are in portrait mode (vertical). What I noticed is that when you slide in the mount it’s a bit loose compared to the landscape mode. If you want to do portrait shots I recommend you set up the tripod in a stable and sturdy surface. It does stay in place but the looseness bothers me a little bit. But what’s nice is the tripod mount can be put on any standard tripod too, if you don’t want to use it on mini tripod legs then break out your larger tripod. Then you will have the stability you’re looking for and to not worried so much on how loose the mount is in portrait mode.

Overall this product is great for starting out and the intermediate mobile photographer. What I’m hoping is they will make a case to fit the iPhone 5, 5C and 5S. I know they would have to redesign the case differently because those iPhones are a little longer than the iPhone 4 and 4S. Even if you don’t use the tripod the case alone is really nice and will protect your iPhone. Again if you use the case and your screen protector is to the edge of the iPhone, it will bubble and peel along the edges. They do make iPhone screen protector that will not go all the way to the edge to avoid these problems. At the moment I can’t think of the company who makes these screen protectors and I was using my sister’s iPhone for the photo shoot demo.
