Combo Apps/Hipstamatic, Retro Camera Plus & Swanko Lab

Reality Check

Tonight’s Combo Apps is about Hipstamatic, Retro Camera Plus and Swanko Lab. They are all really great apps to have in your collection. In my opinion they’re must haves if you into collection apps or great creative outlets. I’ll tell you how I did the image showing on top.

1. I shot it with Hipstamatic with Jimmy Lens and Kodot XGrizzled Film
2. Then used Swanko Lab x3 times. First I made it cold tones, aged and warm saturation.
3. Last I used the Tilt Shift Gen App, to make the flag stand out and blur out the clouds.

That’s how I got that fire in the sky look with the flag. You have to play with Swanko Lab more than one to give you a certain look to you photos/images.

iFake Space
Same with this image you have to play with Swanko Lab to give your sky that Outer Space look. I also added the stars from PFX Weather App. It’s available at the App Store for $1.99 and be used with the iPad as well. What the app does is used preloaded weather images that you can apply to you photos/images. It gives you that added effect to make your photos pop.

Hipstamatic is the camera app I probably use the most. The reason is I always had a love for square images. Second reason I’m doing a 365 Project with the app. I started this project before I got and use Instagram. I don’t post anyone of these images on Instagram. They get posted on Flickr (365 Days Hipstamatic), Tumblr, Twitter and blogged on Word Press. I’m doing really good and I’m in the early 100s. That’s the reason why I’m so prolific in posting photos on Instagram.

The front of the camera app.

The back of the camera app.

You can purchase the Hipstamatic App for $1.99, after you buy the app and it’s loaded onto your iPhone/iTouch/nano. You can buy the Hipstapaks to go along with app. Two of the Hipstapaks are discontinued The Dali Pak and The Holiday Pak. Which is sad because The Dali Pak was one of the best. The lens alone is worth it !!! My favorite combo with the Salvador 84 lens is using the Float Film. I like the details and the film edge. Now again like I told you about Pudding Camera write reviews to bring back that Pak.

Retro Camera Plus is a FREE app !!! It’s a great alternative if you don’t want to pay for an app. One of the best FREE CAMERA APPS !!! It has 5 different cameras, The Barbal, Little Oragne Box, Xaolaroid 2000, Pinhole Camera and Fudge Cam. You can also change it to color or black and white film. The only downside to the app it does have ads, but the ads don’t bother me. It’s also a little slow on the loading, but it’s “FREE” !!!

The Barbal

Now if you hit info button it will give you an idea of how this camera works. Basically it’s a low saturated, neutural color cast with medium contrast.

The info will look like this when you hit the info button.

You can also hit the gallery button to take a look at your photos.

When you touch the photo you have 3 options. Cancel, Share Print (You can uploaded on Facebook, Twitter or e-mail the picture.) and Delete the picture in the gallery. It also saves you pictures. Auto Saves you picture to you camera roll. You can do that through you settings on your phone and set them at High Resplution too.

Little Orange Box

This is the one I used the most when using this app. The reason is it give a nice color cast, scratched up look and high contrast. The things I love when shooting artsy looking pictures.

This and the rest of the 4 cameras have the color/black and white swtich. The Bardal doesn’t have that option. You’ll have to do the switch in the info part.

The Xolaroid 2000

The name of the camera says it all. It’s their Polaroid version of the camera.

Pinhole Camera

This is a really nice version of a Pinhole Camera look. It has that film sprocket hole look to you pictures. It’s gives you some scratches and medium to high contrast.

Fudge Cam

That gives you the toy camera look to your photos with low saturation and a little dreamy look to you photos. This is all the cameras that come with the Retro Camera Plus app.

Swanko Lab

This app was made by the same makers of the Hipstamatic. You can purchase this app for $1.99 at the App Store. What this app does is takes you back to the darkroom days of photographer. You mix chemicals to give you prints a certain look to them. It can give you a warm, aged, cool, retro and black & white look. It reminds me of taking photo classes again. I had so much fun in the darkroom. It’s bringing the romance to photography all over again, with out the smells and mess of chemicals.

This is what it looks like when you start the app after it loads. You can tap and select an image to get started.

After you select your image it give instruction on how everything works.

After you pick out your chemicals the red light turns on and you can process your image.

This is what it looks like when you process your image. You can also move your phone and get that feel of developing your print.

Your print will look like this after it’s done developing. This was one of the formulas I picked out, Beige Alert.

You can pay the $1.99 for the extra formulas and chemicals to your collection. The fee is a one time deal and you get a lifetime of upgrades.

The list of premade formulas. Now I don’t these formulas, but you can try them out and see what you get. I prefer do a mix instead and process it. Then save the print and load it up and mix chemicals and process it again. I’ll so this about 2 to 3 times. Again it’s all about trial an error, i’m not going tot ell you what is right or wrong. You need to figure out how you want your images to look…everyone sees differently and it’s subjective.

I started over again and made the aged look. Then saved this print.

Selected the saved print and processed in warm saturation.

The end results of this print.

Also if you make a mistake in mixing you have the option of empty tray and start again.

Now let me show you an image from Retro Camera Plus.

I used Tilt Shift Gen.

Jerry’s Developer which gives you gloomy and cold tones x2.

1x Jerry Developer and 2x Vinny Vignette which will darken the edges. The final end results of this print.

I wanted to add there is an update with Retro Camera Plus. They added a new camera to their line up. It called Ripsteroku. I plan to play with it more and blog about this new camera in the future.

Here’s an idea if you want to play with apps, try and edit at work on your breaks. Try to take pictures around your work area or at home. You’ll be surprised with the photos your can shoot around work surroundings and at home. A simple walk down the block is another way of taking photos too, making a trip shopping to the Mall can have some interesting pictures too. That’s how I take most of my photos. I edit them at work on my break, when I leave to go home from work, in the morning before I got to work I try and edit photos too and last before you go to bed. I know time can be an obstacle of making time to edit. You just have to find creative ways of finding time. Doing these blogs and editing photos on my iPhone helps me cope with life. If you have any questions let me know…smiles.

I was curious if you ever considered changing the layout of your blog?
Its very well written; I love what youve got to say.
But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with it better.
Youve got an awful lot of text for only having one or 2 images.
Maybe you could space it out better?

    • ashcroft54 says:

Most bloggers have the same layout as I do, I used to just lay it all out but it looked messy. Go to other blog sites and look at their layout. They do the same as me and when you click on the post. It takes you to the full post and I have photos and screen shots with words. It’s a tutorial blog not a personal journal of pictures !!!
